NEWTOWN — A former restaurant and pub in Newtown was completely destroyed after it was engulfed in flames Friday morning, according to multiple fire departments.

The Newtown Hook & Ladder, along with four other Newtown fire departments, were called to a fire at a vacant commercial building on Mount Pleasant Road around 9:30 a.m. Friday. Stony Hill and Brookfield fire departments also responded.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire and pushed into the building until the roof collapsed in the bar area, the fire department said.

Due to the large blaze and damage on the structure, firefighters switched to dousing the building’s exterior, according to the Newtown Hook & Ladder.

At one point, an excavator was called to help put the fire out, according to Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company.

Formerly Hot Shots II, and then McGuire’s Ale House, the vacant building was completely destroyed, the Stony Hill Volunteer Fire Company said.

Newtown and state fire marshals are investigating the cause of the fire.
