Hard-boiled eggs sold by Georgia’s Almark Foods have been linked to a listeria outbreak. The company issued a voluntary recall on Friday for 200,000 pounds of eggs, which it sells in bulk to restaurants and grocery stores for use in prepared foods.
The outbreak has caused sicknesses in five states, including a death. The strain of listeria has been found in Florida, Maine, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas, where the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the one death was reported.
Almark has ceased production of eggs at its Gainesville, Georgia, facility, a spokesman tells the New York Times, as it searches for the source of listeria. The company will not reopen until it has been sterilized and given the okay by the Food and Drug Administration. According to the FDA, the eggs were sold under names including Almark Hard-cooked Eggs, Nic’s Salad Hard-boiled Eggs, Rainbow Select Hard-cooked Eggs, Rainbow Select Hard-cooked Eggs in Vinegar, and Sutherland Select Hard-cooked Eggs.
