A woman has been seriously injured after a restaurant roof collapsed on her while on vacation, just five days after becoming engaged.
Hailey Cooper and her fiancé, William, were holidaying in Cancun, Mexico when the roof of the restaurant they were eating at caved in.
One person died and six others were injured in the incident at the Isla Mujeres beach club restaurant, according to local news outlet Riviera Maya News.
Hailey’s cousin took to Facebook to confirm that while William was uninjured, Hailey was.
She had suffered multiple injuries including fractured vertebrae, tailbone fracture, complete pelvic fracture, epidural hematoma, concussion, facial trauma, as well as multiple lacerations to her head, arms, and back, according to a GoFundMe page.
After three days in Cancun Hospital, she was taken via Air Ambulance to the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, Florida where she remains in the Trauma ICU.
The fundraiser, created to assist with medical bills, hotel fees, and other expenses, has collected more than US$18,000.
“Our goal is to financially help Hailey and The Cooper Family with any medical bills, hotel fees, Hailey’s apartment expenses while she recovers and the long road of recovery that lays ahead,” it said.
Local authorities are investigating the cause of the tragedy with speculation strong winds may have contributed to the roof’s collapse, the outlet reported.
